The King Was Crowned With Thorns (Luke 23:33-46)

Tim Douglass, December 11, 2016
Part of the Advent 2016 series, preached at a Sunday Morning service

The Christmas hymn “Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus” contains the line “Born a child and yet a king”. Jesus truly was born as a king, not as human kings are born and later elevated to the position, He was a king from long before His human birth. The prophesies of the Messiah identify Him as the King of Israel, a title that was used of Him during His ministry. But the only crown that was ever placed on His head was a crown of thorns after He was condemned to die for crimes He did not commit. Our King, the Ruler of all things, received only a mocking parody of the crown He deserves. Jesus’ kingship was not recognized or acknowledged by the people around Him at that time, do we recognize it today?
